Making Sense Of The Senselessness

Some Basic Philosophical Questions Still Remain Unanswered, Even After All These Years

"Utterly senseless; utterly senseless, everything is senseless!" - says Qoheleth, seemingly in despair, in the beginning of the book. It is not difficult to relate to the state of mind of the author of the work, "Ecclesiastes".

The Strength Of The Moment

Aren't All Moments Created Equal?

Ever since we came into being as a result of conception, we have had a string of moments that are significant to us. But how many of those do we really remember, or even acknowledge?

The Cyclicity Of Time

Time Is Linear, It Is We Who Draw Cycles In It

In the beginning, so they say, was just emptiness. And there were a few of these rocks, drifting in space. Somebody who had nothing better to do reached out and began idly spinning the rocks. And then with a disinterested yawn began nudging them to move in random circle-like orbits around a ball of gas. One of these rocks came to be inhabited by people who have not an iota of knowledge of whence they came, and who do not leave any forwarding address when they exit. And yet, they came to consider themselves as the owner of the rock and all that surrounds it.

Symbolism Of The Stork - That Charming Image Of Childhood Days

- A Quaint Symbolism That Is Fast Becoming Irrelevant

- "The real mechanics behind the arrival of babies was revealed for the first time in secondary school when the lanky, curly-haired, hollow-cheeked, poker-faced Biology teacher flipped the pages of the textbook to reach the last chapter. In a span of two (or was it three?) hours spread over as many days, the good man taught us everything there was to know about the science of producing babies, as laid down in the chapter -- which was a few pages of dry narrative of hormonal changes at puberty, jumping directly to the first fused cell in the womb, with labeled sketches of the reproductive anatomy of the two genders alongside. Both the textbook and the teacher took care to keep the attention of the class riveted on the mechanics, and just the mechanics. Focused as one was on the forthcoming board exams, one didn't really bother to figure out what was left out and why.

From Self-Recognition To Self-Awareness To Self-Identity To Self-Actualization

Throughout This Journey, The Soul Remains Silently Observant

Freshmen psychology students are exposed to the concept of animal cognition at some point as they immerse deep into the semesters. One topic they are introduced to in the subject is "mirror self recognition", or MSR. This is a test that determines whether animals can recognize themselves in the mirror - and their ability to do so tells us whether they are aware of their own existence as a distinct, objective entity.

Discover Your Inner Calling

Follow The Direction Your Internal Compass Is Pointing To

Growing up in the Walden County Home for Boys, New York, life for Evan Taylor didn't really look any different from any of the multitudes of orphans who passed out of that place before him, as well as any of the multitudes of kids who will pass out after he did. Evan Taylor was just another paper of data in the Child Services Department. Except that his peers thought he was a freak, as he seemed to be possessed by a firm conviction that his parents would find him some day. And the department counselor found the child's interest in wind chimes rather quirky and quaint and charming. But Evan Taylor was not an ordinary child. They eventually called him a "child prodigy". But that is just another name given to the phenomenon of discovering one's inner calling early on in life.

* Sundial - with the phrase 'Tempus Fugit' inscribed, wiki.

Time Flies, Flies Irretrievably

"It was the best of times,
It was the worst of times,
It was the age of wisdom,
It was the epoch of incredulity,
It was the season of Light,
It was the season of Darkness,
It was the spring of hope,
It was the winter of Despair,
We had everything before us,
We had nothing before us,
We were all going direct to Heaven,
We were all going direct the other way -
In short, the period was so far like the present period,
That some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received,
For good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. _*

Stop Deceiving Yourself - And Start Living Reality

'Head in the sand' - courtesy South Derbyshire District Council_*

* 'Head in the sand'. Do you recognize the two? The one on the left is an ostrich, the one on the right is one of us. That an ostrich deceives itself thus is an absolute myth; in fact, it would be offended were you to attribute to it the trait of self-deception. The same cannot, however, be said about the one on the right.

- "Self-deception is so undeniable a fact of human life that if anyone tried to deny its existence, the proper response would be to accuse this person of it." (Allen Wood, 1988)

At The Crossroads - Which Route Do You Take?

Reconciling The Head With The Heart

Watching a four-wheeler taking shape on the assembly line of an automobile factory is a fascinating experience. The technicians pore intently over each and every mechanism of the contraption before sending it further ahead in the assembly, making sure that when the steering wheel comes into your and my hands, our ride is enjoyable.

The Perpetual Struggle With TIME

The one person I always find perpetually struggling with time is James. James Bond. Movie after movie, the world watches with its breathing stopped, jaws dropped, body hunched forward, hands gripping the seat edge - will he, won't he? - as James, dear James, rushes frantically to locate the switch and turn it off and save the world from the evil machinations of the bad folks.

Scripting Alternate Realities

Be The Script Writer Of Your Life's Story!

It was a pleasure to be called by the young director to see the rushes of the new movie project. The auditorium was full of these twenty-something kids, all of them bubbling with excitement and thrill at the prospect of seeing their own performances on the big screen.

Are You Sure You Have Chosen The Right Icons?

Statues in the Cathedral of Saint Martin, Utrecht, wiki

Are Our Self-Defeating Patterns Driven By Our Icons?

There was a time, when Diana was alive, the medical terms "anorexia nervosa" and "anorexia bulimia" were the staple of coffee-table magazines. It had become a fashion to be diagnosed anorexic or bulimic, and girls vied with each other for who-has-the-thinnest-waist-and-the-boniest-structure of them all. Diana was an icon to them, you see.

Moments of Epiphany - Be Alert When They Come

There is a certain coyness about these moments of epiphany. You wallow in the turmoil of your thoughts, working on the why and the how and the where-for. But you don't get enlightenment. And then, just when you have decided to give up, to simply let it be, pop! ...comes this epiphany. And the entire situation becomes crystal clear, like when the optometrist clicks the right glass in the lens holder, making the last line on the vision chart perfectly readable.

There Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens - Really!

Or, How We Pull The Wool Over Our Own Eyes

Call it Self-Deception. Our need to assure ourselves at all times that everything is alright. Going to such extent as to blind ourselves to the danger staring in our face. Or like Farmer brown experienced, interpret (perhaps) a wolf to be "nobody ... but us chickens".
