You Had Me At Hello

Different Shades To The Color Of Love

I came across an interesting account in an article on cultural anthropology about how the people of Finland handle the emotion of love. The article describes an interview televised in the American program "60 Minutes", in 1993, titled "Tango Finlandia", and I quote:

What If - The Fisherman Does Not Discover The Ring

Bounce Back From Failed Relationships Quickly - There's No Point In Wallowing In Self-Pity

"Abhigyan Shakuntalam", written by Kalidasa, is a favorite play enacted in the junior classes in schools across quite a few south-Asian countries. The play was also once enacted on the occasion of the school's Foundation Day celebrations I got to attend. A quaint story of love triumphing after the usual convolutions, the drama's medieval age values and mores also starkly contrast modern age thinking about relationships, and therefore worth a look in passing.

Let's Arm Ourselves With The Right Attitude - Before Plunging Into Online Relationships
The first inkling that a quiet revolution in the game of courtship was underway came in the mid-to-late-nineties, when a colleague began staying back after office hours, ostensibly to catch up with pending work. On his own initiative, without the supervisor asking him. I still remember the glow of self-compliment I felt that my efforts at employee-motivation were finally showing results, and here was one man who was fully-driven and highly-charged-up to meet his goals; my pep-talk must be really effective, or so I thought. We even mulled the idea of holding him up as mascot to the rest; may be others might feel similarly motivated. It came as a shock therefore when at the end of the quarter the colleague's task-submissions report showed an actual decline by 20%. Hey what was going on?

We've Had Enough Of IQ!

Time was when the only attribute of role-models worth emulating was their IQ. The Intelligence Quotient. Science magazines often showed picture of that man with his tongue sticking out, and seniors shoved the picture before our eyes, expecting us to "be like him". Not in sticking out the tongue, but in matching his IQ.

Resolving Inner Conflicts

[The following passage is excerpted from a forthcoming novel. While readers familiar with Asian cultures might be able to relate to the context of the passage, others may find it interesting to read up on the institution of "arranged marriage" prevalent in these cultures for a deeper understanding of the issues.]
"After waiting endlessly, one night she came to him on her own. Although the 'first night' was officially over long ago, the marriage had yet to be consummated. She was at a loss to understand the strange behavior of this man – the husband her parents had tied her to for the rest of her life.

And They Lived Happily Ever After

As kids, the best way to get our attention - and make us eat food! - was for an elder to pick up some storybook and begin – "Once upon a time..." And we would be plunged into a fantasyland where there was a beautiful princess who would fall in love with a handsome prince. And the monomyth would follow a predictable path of a villain creating all sorts of obstacles in the way of consummation of the love between the two cupid-struck hearts, and the latter overcoming all obstacles and finally uniting, "living happily ever after".

Nothing's Gonna Change My World...

In the first week of February this year, NASA turned its antenna in Madrid towards a distant star, Polaris, situated more than 430 light years from Earth. The venerable organization beamed the Beatles' song, "Across The Universe", towards the star.

Unrequited Love - The Sad Shade Of Valentine

"A mighty pain to love it is,And 'tis a pain that pain to miss;
But of all pains, the greatest pain
It is to love, but love in vain."

Goodbye To Love?

Love Unrequited - How Self-Pitying Can You Be?

There is this song released by the Carpenters way back in 1972. Composed by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis, it was crooned by Richard's sister, Karen for the album - "A Song For You".
