Transformation Of Volleyball Player Into Accomplished Mountaineer! It's Determination To Overcome Adversity

Here is a story of a 35-26 year old girl, a national level volleyball player who was set to take up a job with a public sector organization... when fate intervened to apply the brakes. The girl got involved in a chain-snatching incident with three hooligans, and fell on the railway tracks in the running train she was traveling in. Read how she successfully beat the adversity that destiny threw at her, and how she carved out a new destiny for herself... as a successful mountaineer who scaled Mount Everest!

When One's Own Body Becomes An Object, To Be Abused

When We Become Our Own Enemy

"There is no cry of pain without,
at its end,
an echo of joy"
- Spanish realist poet and philosopher, Ramon de Campoamor

A young, adult male - perfectionist to the core - boxes his own jaw hard and sound, several times, on both the left and the right, when he thinks nobody is looking at him. The harder the better. One more time. Yet one other time. There. Serves you right. You have not been able to make it this time too. You failed to scale your own bar of standards. The throbbing pain on both the sides of the mandible sends shoots of pain in the head, triggering another round of ringing in the ears. Perhaps the onset of tinnitus. You will be alright soon, the pain will numb and ebb away after some time. You will feel better after this bout of self-punishment.

Handling Adversity

Weeping May Endure For A Night, But Joy Cometh In The Morning

That this advertisement clip is now being shown to students in the remotest of colleges nowadays as an icebreaker before beginning a presentation, reveals how a chord somewhere within has been touched universally by its protagonist - a mute girl who is also deaf succeeds in producing music that captivates an audience. This advertisement was shot for Procter & Gamble's Pantene hair shampoo and released in the Thailand market in September 2008; but it has soon come to symbolize the handling and overcoming of adversity. Click on the PLAY button below to watch and enjoy the clip.

Do You Have A Bit Of Dobby In You?

Or, Go Easy On The Guilt And The Atonement

"...you'd be forgiven for thinking me mad - the way I acted this afternoon. The truth is, I feel rather light-headed and foolish in your presence, Cee, and I don't think I can blame the heat. Will you forgive me?" This was the main body of the letter Robbie had intended to put in the envelope to be handed to Cee, or Cecilia. But, in a hurry to get dressed and reach the venue of the party at the Tallis Estate, he inserts a different sheet of paper instead. That day turns out to be quite eventful for him. For the first time, Robbie and Cecilia acknowledge their love for each other. And within the next few hours, Robbie is sent to prison for a crime that he did not commit, on the strength of evidence given by a 13-year-old girl, the girl who had once upon a time harbored a crush on him. I am recounting here the story of the 2007 movie, "Atonement", based on the novel by Ian McEwan.

Those Ruby Slippers Will Take You Home, Dorothy

You Have It In You, You Just Have To Find It

The Scarecrow had all the brains that the rest of us always possess all the time; the only thing that he didn't have was the piece of paper with the word "DIPLOMA" written over it. So when the Wizard of Oz confers upon him the piece of paper, the Scarecrow becomes Dr. Scarecrow, Th.D., short for "Doctorate in Thinkology". The timid Lion had all the courage that ordinary folks have; the only thing that he didn't have was a piece of ornately carved alloy that goes by the name of "medal". So when the Wizard of Oz awards the Lion the Triple Cross - for bravery and valor displayed by him against the wicked witches -, the Lion restores his roar. The Tin Man suffered from the sorrow of not possessing a heart in his bosom. So when the Wizard of Oz presents him with a heart-shaped clock as "a token of society's esteem and affection", the Tin Man discovers that his hollow bosom was not hollow after all. The punch-line that the Tin Man returns with is that "... a heart is not judged by how much you love, but how much you are loved by others." You see, all these creatures carried great virtues in them already. But they never knew.

Diabetes - Silent Killer? Or Awakener?

Diseases Awaken Us To Realities Like None Other Can

If the number of lives snapped up by a given medical condition every year is any indication of that condition's power over the all-powerful humanity, then, with its tally of 3.8 million deaths (as counted in 2007), diabetes stands heads and shoulders above several "traditional" diseases. And it stands shoulder-to-shoulder with HIV/AIDS in the table rankings for claiming the number of lives that it does.

A Chain Made Of Akritic Links And Soritic Metal

Or, Why We End Up Breaking Our Resolutions

In a couple of days' time, this year will complete two months. It is a yearly ritual around this time to search for that list of resolutions that had got made in the heat of the New-Year-eve-moment. It is a ritual also, to rue over how the days have slipped past without even a finger being lifted towards fulfilling the goals in that list. And whatever attempt was made, was half-hearted and short-lived. And before we know it, the year will come to a close. All the lofty resolutions and firm determinations spring out from the list, ghost-like, to mock at us, and we either embarrassingly tear off the list to banish the ghosts forever, or we shove it beneath the pile of papers already on the desk, so that it remains out of sight, or push it deep into the drawer so that it never gets picked up till it is time to clean the drawer.

When Facing Troubles - Focus On The End Outcome You Want

'Creativity' - book by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Amazon.com_*

* 'Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention' by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Amazon.com

...Being "In The Zone", As They Say, Helps You Reach Your Outcome

- Visualize the time when we were in there; yes, in the womb. You don't remember those moments, do you? I don't, either. But no harm in visualizing the time nevertheless. So let's visualize that we are in the womb. Properly fed, nourished and well looked after all 24X7. For all we care, this is the world as we know it. However, in the past few hours, there is this sensation that something is pushing us. Some squeeze happening… ouch! What was that? Why are we being turned upside down, left to right, as if being aligned across some axis, by some invisible, gentle but firm hands? And ...whoa! Now why are we being pushed like this? Why is there so much movement all of a sudden... Momma, it is scary! This slide through the narrow tract... oh, what is happening to me? Why is it happening to me? Oh what have I done? However, there is a strange feeling of surrender in this helplessness. A feeling that the end result will be good. Never mind that our faculty of focusing on the end outcome is undeveloped. And never mind that - at that point of time at least - we ourselves do not know what an end outcome we should be desiring for ourselves.

Carpe Diem? Or Delayed Gratification?

...Don't Follow The Herd, Don't Toss The Coin Either

...sapias, vina liques et spatio brevi spem longam reseces.
dum loquimur, fugerit invida aetas:
carpe diem quam minimum credula postero.

Strain your wine and prove your wisdom; life is short; should hope
be more?
In the moment of our talking, envious time has ebb'd away.
Seize the present; trust to-morrow e'en as little as you may.

So wrote Quintus Horatius Flaccus - aka Horace - in his Odes, Book

Raise Your Hands - All Those Who Love Money

Ask a packed room of people from any and all walks of life this question - "All Ye Folks! Raise Your Hands - Those Of You Who Love Money. Lots And Lots Of Money". Chances are that people will raise their amused expression and their hands without any second thought. What a question! Of course, who doesn't? Love money, that is. Even the kid sitting in the front with her parents will raise her hand. No, not to conform with the rest of the audience, but because she has been too close to the flames of the low-intensity warfare of the 24X7 bickering between her parents on who runs the show, sorry, the home. It's a part of her life - this money business. Oh, she knows how important money is, the little girl.

Heal Thyself - You Are Your Own Healer

Don't Sidestep The Minefields Of Past Hurts - Examine Them

We all have some moments in the past that are best not mulled over. Some events, some people, some happenings, that we are not yet comfortable with. They either make us sad or sorrowful, or hurt and angry. We obviously wish that the life script had played out differently than it did.

Use Spring Time To Clear The Deadwood And Detox

It is spring time! Time to put away the snow brush if we happen to live in the freezing zones. Time to set aside some time to clean the house. Time to get down on the knees, peer beneath the bed with long broom in hand, and remove all the detritus lying there. Time to climb up a high stool / step-ladder and reach out to the corners where the walls meet to gently sweep away the cobwebs. Time to mop away the goop on the kitchen walls (behind the oven), created last month by a hot porridge flung from a plate by somebody in an equally hot mood.

Self-Confidence Is What Makes Your Life

Self-confidence should not be confused with cocky arrogance. Self-confidence is the quiet faith that one has within oneself, about oneself. When thrown in any given situation, self-confidence is the absolute, unshakeable, for-granted, natural subconscious feeling that one has control over oneself, and therefore,...

Why Should One Have Goals In Life?

Image by woodsy (Steve Woods), stock.Xchng

To Rise Above Being Just A Driftwood, That's Why...

A tree standing on the bank of a river could only bend so much when a strong breeze came. It suddenly snapped and broke in the middle. The main trunk dropped with a loud crash in the flowing waters. The strong currents soon took the trunk along. And along it went.
